Laser research requires separate and planned facilities. This is true at least for biomedical applications. Furthermore, at least for the present, investigations in effects of the laser on living tissue will have to be controlled as much as possible. Such controlled research can be done and adequate precautions taken in areas devoted solely to laser work. If only an optical bench is used somewhere just in the corner of a room, it is difficult not only to work in this restricted area, but also to provide the special safety measures which laser research requires.
