Abstract

The paper reviews a rational design procedure for achieving ductility in reinforced concrete structures. The method described is believed to ensure that the post- elastic performance of the structure is adequate. The concepts of plastic and elastoplastic response of the structure to the design earthquake are reviewed by considering the single- degree- of- freedom oscillator and extending the argument to multidegree systems.
