The histoenzymic and ultrastructural changes in skeletal muscle of rabbits given sodium fluoride and in human skeletal muscle obtained from patients afflicted with fluorosis demonstrate that, in fluorosis, the skeletal muscle is directly involved. Investigations, carried out to explore the interaction of fluoride ions with the structure and function of muscle fibers, showed that there are widespread degenerative changes leading to generalized atrophy of the fibers.
