Studies show that joint distension with saline, sometimes with added steroids, gives pain relief, improves range of motion, and functionality of the glenohumeral joint. The effect is seen both in diabetic and nondiabetic patients. There is discussion if a volume of less than 40–80 ml has any dilating effect. A single repeat dilation can have an effect; more than two sessions do not have an added effect. In comparative studies, no superiority of joint hydrodilation over other therapeutic options has been found.
