Abstract

The bearings of fast running spindles in precision machine tools are to be sealed leak-free against heavily splashing coolants, and, eventually, injected lubricant has to be kept inside the bearing area. Rubbing seals are ruled out because of their high friction heat connected with untolerable deformations. The basic functions of these labyrinths are discussed and put into practice. The paper introduces a variety of carefully thought-out labyrinth systems for practical application and the designer is supplied with detailed design directives. (from Authors)
