Composting is a process of microbial degradation in which organic matter is broken down by a mixed microbial population in a warm, moist, aerobic environment. A wide range of wastes can be converted into useful compost products. This chapter considers the biochemical, microbiological and process factors involved in composting. Practical processes are then considered for the treatment of organic wastes from urban, farm and garden sources. Brief mention is made of compost compositions and uses.
