Abstract

The endemic earthworm species of indigenous forest (eg. acanthodrilines) and primary grassland (eg. microchaetines), the introduced species, their population densities, cast activity, survival mechanisms, relation to soil type, vertical migration, reproduction and life cycles are discussed. Endemic species are found to be better adapted to climatic conditions, but are less able to survive the pressures of cultivation.
