Metabolic syndrome (MetS) refers to the co-occurrence of a cluster of conditions including obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, resulting in a high predisposition for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The prevalence of MetS is on the rise in children and adolescents in parallel with the rise in prevalence of obesity. Although research continues to better define this entity, treat the manifestations, and uncover novel interventions based on pathophysiologic mechanisms, it is important to recognize risk factors early in childhood and implement strategies early to mitigate the high risk of morbidity and mortality into adulthood.
