Abstract

Lake Chad has fluctuated between about 278 and 284 m above sea level in the last 100 years. A graph of lake level is reconstructed using records of the discharge of the Nile: these are related to rainfall records and it is concluded that normal climatic fluctuations can persist for long enough to reduce the length of the lake by up to 150 km and to move the southern limit of the Sahara as much as 300 km further south.-K.Clayton
