Abstract

I hope the chapter concerned with slit sensilla made clear that when applied to biological objects, the science of mechanics is not as lifeless as many biologists still suppose. It should also now be apparent that in order to understand mechanosensitive organs, we must first understand the mechanical processes of transmission and transformation as the stimulus passes through intervening tissues to the actual receptor cell. Such details are often crucial, if we are to fully appreciate the fascination of the ``design''.
