This chapter briefly looks into the different theories of individual ageing and their relationship with economic activity and circumstances. It draws upon the scholarly output in biological sciences, psychology, and social gerontology. Biological theories seek to provide an answer to why and how and where human beings age. Psychological theories look into effects of ageing on cognitive functions, personality, behaviour, and human development. Social gerontological theories tackle the changes in social roles, expectations, and aspirations as people age.
