Abstract

Nowadays, Presence Technology is starting to appear in an unbounded number of applications. Whit presence technology, users don't need to know where their contacts are. Now, presence systems are increasing thanks to the use of open standards, such as XMPP, SIMPLE and IMPS. However, these standards are not interoperable with each other. Some solutions have been proposed in the pursuit of resolve this problem, but these solutions don't provide a full interoperability between these protocols. This is why in this paper; we present a middleware-base architecture to provide interoperability between standardized Instant Messaging and Presence Protocols. This architecture can provide not only interoperability but also extensibility for additional features, such as convert between different data types, in other words, convert instant messages to voice messages, instant messages to email, instant messages to SMS and SMS to voice messages. These functionalities provide a enhance user experience and people-to-people interaction. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
