contemporary work examining legal issues of violence toward children tends to focus on two basic questions / when is it appropriate for the state to intervene in situations of child maltreatment / when the state does intervene, how should it respond to these cases / review these two questions, presenting a variety of viewpoints, and, when possible, discussing empirical findings regarding the role of the legal system in cases of child physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse trace the processing of child abuse and neglect cases through the criminal justice system from the beginning stage of reporting to final disposition / points at which the legal system has difficulty in processing child maltreatment cases will be reviewed, as will some of the innovative procedures now being implemented in an attempt to improve the process (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
