Protective antigens for both sporozoite and merozoite stages of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum have been identified and their genes cloned. Evidence indicates that strong adjuvants will be required to induce protective immune responses to the antigens and their gene-cloned products. Currently, the unavailability of a safe and effective adjuvant acceptable for clinical use is a major obstacle in the success of human malaria vaccine. © 1988.
