Abstract

The high specific power of modern rail traction diesel powerplant is primarily due to increased levels of turbocharging while recent developments in higher efficiency turbochargers assist in the attainment of low fuel consumption and reduced thermal loading. Since rail traction is one of the most arduous duties encountered by the diesel engine turbocharger, durability and ease of maintenance are also strong prerequisites.
