The statistical/probabilistic approach has lead to importantbreakthroughs in language processing and to an impressive impact onreal-world applications. This paper examines two issues which have notyet been adequately handled: meaning and creativity. To integrate them, and thus further advance the state of the art, requires a new approachto meaning and a meta-level architecture capable of creative insightinto problem solving. I illustrate these ideas using ongoing experimentsof language games with autonomous robots.
