Abstract

Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive disease that occurs either from anomalous lymphatic development or from injury to the lymphatic system. This condition requires lifetime maintenance. Intermittent pneumatic compression reduces lymphedematous extremities by recapitulating physiologic lymphatic flow. Device variables include: (1) number of chambers; (2) sequential or nonsequential pressure; and (3) gradient or non-gradient compression. We recommend that an individual pump for 2 h per day at his/her convenience.
