Abstract

The pattern matching method is theoretically studied based on the structure of patterns. Secondly, the input pattern is defined in a generalized form including a ″blurring″ parameter. The blurring operation has the merit of suppressing noises accompanying with the input pattern, but has the demerit of decreasing the similarity measure. A new processing method of canonicalization is defined that overcomes this difficulty. Thirdly, the mathematical structure of the similar pattern set of the same category class is studied. A practical optical character reader ASPET/71 capable of reading printed characters with very poor print quality has been designed by the theory described.
