Abstract

The additional drag experienced by a body near the free surface is investigated on ellipsoidal models. Results of the present study are compared with Wigleys analytical results obtained from first order wave theory. Experiments are conducted on three ellipsoidal models and one hydrodynamic body. The results are presented in the form of coefficients of total drag with the variation of Froude number for different depths of submergence to the body diameter ratio. It is observed that the behaviour of wave drag on ellipsoidal models is similar to that of theoretical results. The experimental results agreed well with the theoretical results at Froude number 0.6.
