The analysis of soil use and occupation is an asset in evaluating the consequences that certain human activities may affect the environment. Research on the stream São Tomé basin, northwestern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, is highlighted. Current research analyzes the use and occupation of the basin comprised by the municipalities of Cianorte and São Tomé PR Brazil. Characterization was undertaken from an analysis of demographic data of the municipalities which are part of the region and of thematic charts which represent declivity, hypsometry and the soil's use and occupation for 1985 and 2008. Results show that whereas the basin's use has increased from 75.3% to 81.2% by temporary crop cultures, a decrease in environmental preservation areas from 8.2% to 7.0% occurred.
