The article provides an overview on the metabolism of a city and its global impacts. It explains the objective of the material dimensions approach of cities. It discusses the main and intricate problems arising from the large growth in materials and energy turnover, including resource availability, justice in resource access and environmental loadings. The article also examines the implications of the assumption that consumer-oriented emissions are more important than production-oriented emissions for the design of environmental protection strategies. It then looks at the goals of an urban metabolism that can be sustained for long periods.
