Abstract

Twelve years after the trial of Bartholomew Carranza, an inquisitorial prosecution was held against the experts in Hebrew Luis de León, Gaspar de Grajal y Martín Martínez de Cantalapiedra, and lasted seven years (1571 to 1578). Grajal died while imprisoned by the Inquisition, whereas Luis de León and Martín Martínez de Cantalapiedra were acquitted. The judicial procedure curbed the new line of exegesis opened by these three professors and promoted fear towards the Inquisition thereby restricting academic freedom.
