Objective: We compared the clinical efficacy of salbutamol inhaled from Easyhaler(registered trademark), a multidose powder inhaler with that of salbutamol inhaled from Diskhaler(registered trademark) powder inhaler in the treatment of histamine-induced bronchoconstriction. Patients and Methods: The study was an open, randomised, crossover study, completed by 18 patients with asthma (mean age 31 (plus or minus) 15 years). A histamine challenge test was performed on two study days (separated by a maximum of 7 days) to produce a 15% decrement in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and a single dose of salbutamol 200 (mu)g was inhaled immediately after challenge on one study day from Easyhaler(registered trademark) and on the other study day from Diskhaler(registered trademark) in randomised order. The FEV 1 and peak expiratory flow (PEF) values were measured by spirometer before and immediately after histamine challenge and 5, 15 and 45 minutes after medication. On the second study day, the patients were asked to grade the inhalers' characteristics using a questionnaire. Results: No statistically significant differences were noted in efficacy variables between the inhalers. The primary efficacy variable, maximum FEV1 values, were 3.29 L (SD = 0.55 L) and 3.30 L (SD = 0.56 L) with Easyhaler(registered trademark) and Diskhaler(registered trademark), respectively. The patients considered Easyhaler(registered trademark) more convenient and easier to use than Diskhaler(registered trademark). Conclusion: We conclude that Easyhaler(registered trademark) and Diskhaler(registered trademark) produce equal bronchodilation when histamine-induced bronchoconstriction is treated with a 200 (mu)g dose of salbutamol.
