THE number of fishes from the hadal zone (in depths between about 6,000 and 11,000 m. in the deep-sea trenches) is very limited. The Princesse-Alice collected Bassogigas profundissimus (Roule) at 6,035 m. in the east Atlantic Ocean1, the Galathea collected a species of Liparidae (Kermadec Trench, 6,660-6,770 m.) and Bassogigas sp. (the Sunda Trench, 7,160 m.)2, and the Vitjaz collected Careproctus (Pseudoliparis) amblystomopsis Andriashev and another species of that genus from the Kurile-Kamtchatka Trench (7,210-7,230 m.) and from the Japan Trench (6,156 and 7,587 m.)3-5. Thus, the last-named depth is the hitherto greatest known depth from which any fish has been brought up. © 1961 Nature Publishing Group.
