Abstract

This paper reports the work of Middlesex University in the CLEF bilingual task. We have carried out experiments using Portuguese queries to retrieve documents in English. The approach used was Latent Semantic Indexing, which is an automatic method not requiring dictionaries or thesauri. We have also run a monolingual version of the system to work as a baseline. Here we describe in detail the methods used and give an analysis of the results obtained. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.
