Abstract

The phytolith classification developed at the Paleoethnobotany Laboratory of the University of Missouri-Columbia is a hierarchically arranged photo identification aid of numbered phytolith types. Currently eleven major categories are defined based on cellular origin; expansion to include additional categories is easily accomplished. Lower order divisions are based on morphological details. Category 10, epidermal quadrilaterals, is described in detail as an example of the system. Classification issues are discussed, focusing on recording of unknown and redundant forms and methods of examination.
