Gender violence in Colombia: silent epidemic amid Covid-19

Abstract

In reality, the health emergency due to Covid-19 in Colombia not only affected the physical health of the entire population; but also, that it increased violence against women and LGTBI people, thus becoming a silent epidemic. With the mandatory quarantine measures, the number of complaints of gender violence rises, the unemployment of women increases and many, who are domestic workers, did not receive any remuneration during confinement. Among other social and family facts, the approach to this social problem starts, then, from upbringing, households, social determinants, disclosure and even actions that prioritize those women who are unaware of their rights, and the diversity of violence against women which are submitted; therefore, it leads to the convergence of social-citizen participation with construction networks on new positions to counteract gender violence, the de-construction of social and imaginary representations according to the role of gender and the re-construction of alternatives, bets and new proposals that lead to significant changes in the treatment of women in various contexts and from all possible angles.
