Abstract

The rewarding effects of drugs of abuse such as stimulants, opiates, and cannabinoids appear to depend on the mesolimbic dopamine pathway and related brain regions in the basal ganglia. Activation of dopamine receptors causes induction of various genes. One such gene, fosB, plays a critical role in the rewarding effects of stimulants. This transcription factor may be a mediator of a drug's abusive properties. [References: 55]
