Abstract

Problems of fresh groundwater pollution with technogenic tritium areconsidered with Obninsk (Russia) for illustration. The paper deals withengineering and geological reasons of groundwater pollution with tritiumnear Obninsk. Tritium concentrations in municipal water intakes andsprings are by 20-100 and 10,000 times, respectively, higher as comparedto the background value in Russia as a whole. The highest concentrationsare observed near radioactive waste repositories. Tritium migration overthe water bearing horizons and tritium dispersal within the anomaly arestudied. Health risk assessment for Obninsk population has beenperformed. The risk of stochastic effects of exposure in chronic tritiumintake amounted to 1 10(-7).
