Abstract

The introduction of ID cards enhanced with electronic authentication services opens up the possibility to use these for identification and authentication in e-business applications. To avoid incompatible national solutions, the specification of the European Citizen Card aims at defining interoperable services for such use cases. Especially the given device authentication methods can help to eliminate security problems with current e-business and online banking applications. Recently Giesecke & Dcvrient (G&D) and Wirecard Bank AG showcased the first e-business application that utilizes an electronic ID card based on the European Citizen Card standards together with a new online banking application that allows consumers to authenticate using an official personal identity document. Thus users and online service providers of this application can benefit from added security in their internet transactions, thanks to secure mutual authentication based on an official electronic document. © 2009 Vieweg+Teubner | GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden.
