Transrectal ultrasound guided (TRUS) systematic biopsy with typically 10-12 cores is the international standard procedure for the detection of prostate cancer in the clinically suspect prostate. However, dealing with patients who have elevated or increasing PSA values and a prior negative TRUS-guided biopsy is a controversially discussed issue in urological societies. Statistics show a rapid decrease of detection rates in re-TRUS biopsies from 23% after the first round to 17.6% and 11.7% on the second and third re-biopsy (Zackrisson et al. 2004). Saturation biopsy with up to 48 cores can increase detection rate to 33% (Zaytoun et al. 2011).
