Abstract

A central tenet of the Hippocratic oath is the injunction to do no harm. Patients attend physicians trusting that our knowledge is sufficient and our discretion complete, but above all else, that they will be treated with empathy and judiciousness. If we are to avoid doing harm we must recognize that patients have needs which encompass both the physical and psychological realms. © 2006 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
