Two main types of REE deposits are known in Mongolia: (1) REE carbonatite type associated with late Mesozoic volcanic-plutonic complexes with mainly light REE-P-Sr-Ba-F-Pb and Fe-REE or magnetite-apatite deposit type in South Gobi: Mushgai Khudag, Khotgor, and Lugiin Gol, and (2) peralkaline granite related REE (Zr-Nb-REE) deposit type in Western Mongolia associated with peralkaline rocks: Khalzan Buregtei, Ulaantolgoi, Shartolgoi, Ulaan Del, and Khanbogd in South Mongolia. Other types include Late Paleozoic and Mesozoic REE pegmatite associated with calc-alkaline and Li-F leucogranite, and REE-albite and REE-albite nepheline syenite deposit types.
