Abstract

Problem-solving ability in derivative of functions is one of calculus learning goals in University. This study aimed to explore students' abilities to solve derivative of functions problems in rate and speed contents. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subjects were 46 students of mathematics education at Syiah Kuala University in the second semester of the first year. The data were collected by providing a test instrument for solving derivative of functions problems to the subjects. The data were analyzed by conducting written data, interpreting, and concluding. The results of the analysis concluded that few students were able to solve the problem of derivative functions in the content of speed and rate of change. From these findings it is necessary to explore in depth the thought processes of subjects who are able and unable to solve problems related to the rate of change and speed.
