Abstract

Until 1999, Lex and RAC were two separate organisations, each with a long history in the vehicle business. The Royal Aeronautical Club was formed in 1897 and Lex started in the garage parking business in 1928. Subsequently, Lex acquired vehicle contract hire companies and formed Lex Transfleet, Lex Vehicle Leasing and Lex Harvey (access and construction equipment, since sold). In the 1990s Lex acquired Multipart, the parts procurement, storage and supply business. In the meantime, RAC acquired the British School of Motoring and was then itself acquired by Lex in 1999. Lex re-named the group RAC whilst maintaining the main brand names such as BSM, Multipart and the various Lex companies including Lex Transfleet. © 2005 Jane's Information Group.
