Abstract

In this study, the role of tourists in engendering sustainable development in the Northern Cyprus tourism sector is empirically scrutinized. In particular, the effect of tourist behavior and the implementation of responsible tourism is examined. Using a mixed methods approach, the study provides evidence that tourist behavior in Northern Cyprus plays a significant role in promoting sustainable tourism development. Tourists surveyed indicated awareness of the impact of their behavior on the environment and local communities, and reported that they would be willing to modify their behavior to reduce negative impacts. The most common behaviors reported by tourists in Northern Cyprus included reducing energy consumption, conserving water, and reducing waste. Based on the findings, policy and future research recommendations were made.
