For the past decade, Japan has struggled with economic stagnation, an aging population, and strict immigration policies. In late 2012, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe put in place a robust economic stimulus plan, Abenomics, to re-invigorate the economy and move Japan forward. An essential element focused on women joining, returning to, and remaining in the workforce. This would not only add significantly to the economy, but also it would increase women's participation to offset the aging demographic shifts. While economic data supported the plan, Japan is starting with a deficit for women; fewer are in the workforce, a higher concentration in lower-paying jobs, and a small percentage in leadership .
