The hybrid wavelet packet improves the performance of wavelet packet transform by choosing appropriate quadrature mirror filters. Therefore, it is proposed for digital image compression in this paper. We use a top-down scheme to optimize the hybrid wavelet packet and the wavelet coefficients are quantized with a successive approximation algorithm and then coded with context-based arithmetic coding. Experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm has better performance than SPIHT and EZW for images with complex texture.
