Abstract

This monograph summarises and discusses a study (1959-98) of Fyfield and West Overton, two contiguous parishes in Wiltshire, England. They lie north to south across the upper Kennet valley between Avebury and Marlborough where the young River Kennet breaches the chalk at the south-west corner of the Marlborough Downs. The two parishes embrace a large area of grass downland across their northern parts. Southwards are expanses of mainly historic permanent arable on the slopes north and south of the valley floor.
