In 1991 a new range of submersible pumps particulary designed to handle abrasive and clogging media was introduced by ITT Flygt. Pumping this kind of media put new and higher demands on the sealing system between the pump housing and the electric motor and required a new approach. The outcome was a seal design characterized by a flushed and smooth exterior, solid cemented carbide seal rings, protected spring and drive system in addition to special semidynamic secondary seal. The development, design and testing of this mechanical seal is described. (from Author)
