Abstract

By the use of Friction Stir Processing (FSP), in the following paper aluminium alloy 5083 will be reinforced using silicon carbide (SiC) and alumina (Al2O3) to form a metal matrix composite. Through FSP only the surface of the material is altered making it possible to withstand higher strength-to-weight ratios. SiC and Al2O3 have both the properties such as low densities and high strengths, therefore, through the combination of both particles a hybrid composite will be achieved. In this study, several numbers of passes will be used in each sample which is going to be characterized by different proportions of the reinforcement particles while parameters such as, traverse speed and rotational speed are fixed.
