Abstract

In any form of microscopy, one needs not only an imaging system with enough resolution to delineate the fine details of the specimen but also a suitable contrast mechanism by which to see the shape of the structures of interest. Contrast is the difference between the signal in one pixel and that in another that conveys to the viewer information about the shape of the specimen.
