The number of Internet users is increasing dramatically. With the sharp increase in online users, the market for web advertising is also growing. In the last decade, the web advertising revenues in the United States, as well as worldwide, have increased significantly. With the growth of web advertising, several web sites have now begun to depend heavily on the revenue generated by the advertisements displayed on the site. For such sites, revenue generated from advertisements is critical for survival. This chapter discusses how the web advertising evolved over time.
