Abstract

The Problem. Many researchers consider statistical aspects of the study only when analyzing the data. This can lead to study designs that do not address the intended research aims. Role of Driving Simulators. Driving simulator studies can address a variety of important research hypotheses and typically involve the collection, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data. Key Implications of Statistical Concepts for Driving Simulator Studies. This chapter emphasizes how statistical issues arise through many phases of the planning and implementation of simulator studies. This assertion is illustrated using a hypothetical study of an in-vehicle alerting device in a driving simulator. Scenarios and Dependent Variables. In our hypothetical study, the researchers want to test whether an alerting device in a two-way traffic scenario can increase safety. The researchers discuss potential definitions for dependent variables that could measure safety and other important experimental design issues are also discussed. Generality. Integration of statistical considerations into the entire research process is essential to the success of a driving simulator study.
