Abstract

Appraoch 1 = Molecular context: internal (mood, state) vs. external (environmental, spatial). Approach 2: Everyday context (autoamtically activated, not under conscious control): prime expecting events and actions. These approaches led to different research questions. Tulving & Thomson (1973): Encoding specificity priniple (ESP): automatic facilitation, for example when associated information is activated first. Context effects: same environment, (room), same S order. Context effects relatively AUTOMATIC processes without phenomenal awareness. EVERYDAY context (=script like): repeated context vs. infrequent context.
