Abstract

An outline of techniques for coppicing existing woodland (for fuelwood and as a wildlife habitat) and for establishing new coppices primarily for fuelwood production in Britain. Some fast-growing exotic species recommended for the latter are: Salix fragilis and S. alba cultivars for stream and pond sides; Alnus cordata, Populus nigra, P. X euramericana [P. X canadensis aggr.] cultivars and P. trichocarpa 'Fritzi Pauley' and 'Scott Pauley' on moist but well-drained sites; and Eucalyptus gunnii, E. niphophila, Nothofagus procera and N. obliqua on well-drained fertile lowland sites (avoiding frost hollows).
