The crucial problem in semantic data integration is creating and maintaining mappings between heterogeneous, independently designed data sources. To deal with the problem we can enrich XML schemas with semantic information from a domain ontology by annotating the schema. In this paper we discuss how the annotation establishing matches between XML schema components and the ontology, and the ontological knowledge itself, can be used to (quasi)automatic creation of mappings between schemas. A special attention is paid to the original concept of conditional annotations which occur in modeling of specialization. © Springer-Verlag 2009.
