This chapter analyses the behaviour of hydropower plants under PID controllers. The stability of the unit in isolated operation, using Routh–Hurwitz stability criterion, is analysed. After that, the stability of the plant connected to a power system is also analysed. Then, the stability of plant operating with deadband is discussed. In addition, some tuning rules for PI and PI with anti-windup controllers are presented. Finally, some conclusions are drawn.
