Abstract

. Recently, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have generated a lot of attention to researchers for the intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The IEEE 802.11 standard outlines the specification of medium access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) of VANETs which uses the enhanced distributed channel access function (EDCAF) to support contention-based prioritized quality of service (QoS) in the MAC layer. In this paper, an analytical model is developed to estimate the performance of the IEEE 802.11 EDCAF for VANETs. Mobility is taken into consideration. The relationship between performance metrics and EDCAF parameters are derived. Markov chain model based theoretical analysis is carried out. Throughput, packet dropping rate (PDR) and delay terms are attained. Furthermore, the performance model is tested by simulation results.
