Abstract

Concern for the state of the environment is a global problem that involves inalienable human rights of growing importance for the sustainability of life. The purposeof this article is to analyze the place of formal environmental education in the compulsoryeducation system of the Argentine Republic. It also understands that environmentaleducation is a preventive policy and management instrument that contributesto promoting social behavior and values related to environmental protection. It is anexploratory work with a qualitative methodology that is based on documental analysis.Throughout this work some aspects of environmental education are conceptualized; theprocess of institutionalization at a national and provincial levels is looked through; andthe common curricula contents, related to the environment established for the educational system are presented. Conclusions allow us to observe that formal environmentaleducation has remained, beyond the changes in environmental policies and the organizationof the State, and a set of regulations, organisms, and curricular contents in theschool that had been institutionalized
